The Career and Technology Centre provides students with access to rigorous academic
and technical curriculum in preparation for further education and careers in high-skill,
high-demand occupations. Working with experts, students access industry standard, high
quality learning environments that extend into authentic work experience opportunities
and lead to recognized post-secondary and industry credentials. Igniting student passions
and interest at the “Centre” supports success both within and beyond their schooling
experiences.
The Career and Technology Centre changes the way most of us think about school. Students who attend the Centre will take courses at their designated high schools, but they will also access the Centre to enhance their learning through credentialed, dual credit or pre-placement programs for specific periods of time.
CTC students have the opportunity to earn industry and post-secondary credentials and
dual credit or pre-placement opportunities. Much of the ground work for considering a
learning opportunity at the Centre will be laid for students throughout their junior
high/middle and early high school years through personal learning plans. This way, by
the time students get to high school, they will have a good understanding of their skills
and passions, and can make informed decisions about the credentialed opportunities
available to them through the Centre.
The Centre is open to any student wishing to complete and/or work towards a credential in any of the available programs, provided their application is accepted. Typically, the majority of students are in grades 11 and 12 (16-18 years old who concurrently attend a high school program) with a significant number of adult students aged 19-22. The time required to complete credentials is significant and students are welcome to finish their program well after high school graduation if necessary. A large number of students begin their credentialing studies in high school and continue past high school graduation before completing all requirements.
Transportation to and from the Centre is the students responsibility. Some Calgary Board of Education (CBE) high schools may offer limited bus services at their discretion, based on volume and need. Student parking is available for free. Parking passes may be obtained in the Centre's main office.
Students remain the responsibility of their home school and choose to attend the Centre
for the period of time in which they take their credential. This may be for a semester, a
summer, evenings, or week-ends depending on the program in which the student is
enrolled and the student’s other commitments. The Centre has the capacity to offer
programs within and outside of the regular school day and year.
Students remain the responsibility of their home school: high school completion remains the goal. Completion of a credential, at the same time as part of their learning plan, is an added benefit and incentive to staying in school as they work toward their future goals.
The qualification of the teacher is determined by the program offered. For example, an
apprenticeship program must be taught by a journey person who also has a teaching
certificate. Pre-placement programs, such as Pre-Engineering, need a teacher with a
specialization or credential in that area.
Regular attendance is a program expectation, just as it is at the home high school and will
be supervised through the teacher, on-site administration and home high school
administration.
See the Registration page for detailed registration information. Typically, Calgary Board of Education (CBE) students register via their school counselor in conjunction with their regular timetable. Non-CBE students can submit a registration application via the Registration page. The Centre operates on a semester system. Classes start in September and February for the 2011-12 school year. Students may join the program up to 3 weeks past the start date in each semester. See the CTC Calendar (pdf) for precise dates.
Phase 2 of the Centre includes completion of construction at the current site and the addition of more credentialed programs. The vision for future sites is being contemplated and their locations have yet to be determined as part of the larger Career and Technology Strategy.
